Leptodactylus fragilis, known under many common names such as the Mexican white-lipped frog, American white-lipped frog or simply white-lipped frog, is a species of leptodactylid frog. Its distribution ranges from the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas in the United States south through Mexico and Central America to Colombia and Venezuela. Appearance
Mexican white-lipped frog is a small frog ranging in size from 1 to 2 inches, with a slim body and smooth skin. It exhibits various shades of brown and irregular, darker markings for camouflaging purposes. Male species have a distinct dark throat, and all bear the signature feature of large discs on their fingers and toes. Adults have a larger size compared to juveniles.
Behavior
Mexican white-lipped frog is a nocturnal amphibian exhibiting solitary behavior. It feeds actively at night, preying on insects and invertebrates. During breeding season, it constructs circular foam nests near water bodies for egg-laying. Unique to mexican white-lipped frog is its defensive posture: when threatened, it puffs up its body and produces a loud, aggressive call to deter predators.
