Leptodactylus fallax, commonly known as the mountain chicken or giant ditch frog, is a species of frog that is native to the Caribbean islands of Dominica and Montserrat. The population has declined 81% in the last ten years and this species is now critically endangered. In 2004 it was estimated that the population possibly was as low as 8,000 individuals. Appearance
Giant ditch frog is a large, robust frog with smooth, often seemingly waxy skin. It exhibits a dominant brown color, interspersed with patches of vibrant yellow and orange. Its well-muscled hind legs end in small, disc-tipped toes. They have a row of distinctive hardened skin ridges running from the eye to the shoulder, often in lighter or darker color than the overall skin tone. Behavior
Giant ditch frog is a predominantly nocturnal species, notable for its aggressive defense tactics and unique breeding habits. Females excavate 'foam nests' for eggs, which the male defends fiercely.
