Description

Leptobrachium hendricksoni (common names: Thai spadefoot toad, bright yellow-eyed crawl frog, spotted litter frog) is a species of amphibian in the Megophryidae family. It is found in Malay Peninsula (Southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia), Sarawak (Borneo), and Sumatra (Indonesia). Its natural habitats are tropical moist lowland forests, rivers, freshwater marshes, and nearby plantations and heavily degraded former forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Diet

Spotted litter frog subsists mainly on a diet of small invertebrates, often consuming a variety of insects like ants and termites. They're also known to eat spiders, showcasing their insectivorous nature.

Appearance

Spotted litter frog is a medium-sized frog with a robust body and smooth, moist skin. Its body is predominantly black, but exhibits remarkable hot pink markings around its eyes, sides, and limbs. Additionally, its pale belly is adorned with dark speckles. This amphibian's round head has prominent eyes and a short snout. Both the males and females share these traits with no notable differences.

Behavior

Spotted litter frog is a nocturnal amphibian with a small home range, typically maintaining solitary behavior except during mating periods. This species engages in specific vocalization patterns for mate attraction. Adapted to its forest habitat, spotted litter frog primarily relies on its cryptic coloration and sit-and-wait strategy for predation and survival.
