Diet

Hasselt's toad is chiefly insectivorous, consuming a wide variety of insects including ants, beetles, and moths. These amphibians also display opportunistic feeding habits, occasionally including small crustaceans and other small amphibians in their diet.

Appearance

Hasselt's toad is a small, robust frog, measuring about 5cm in length. It has smooth skin marked by dark brown and blackish spots on its greyish-brown body. Its hands and feet are highly webbed, supporting its semi-aquatic lifestyle. The frog displays a thin black line from its eye to its arm insertion, a notable feature. Unlike many species, there's no significant visual difference between males and females.

Behavior

Hasselt's toad is primarily nocturnal, spending daytime hours concealed. This species is solitary outside of mating season, with males vocalizing to attract females and deter rivals. Its propulsive jumping is distinctive, a survival adaptation for quick escapes. This creature also exhibits skin color changes for camouflage in its forest habitat.
