Diet
Taosze spiny toad primarily feeds on small invertebrates, exhibiting a unique predilection for ants and termites. This nocturnal amphibian is also known to occasionally supplement its insect-centric diet with earthworms and various small arthropods.
Appearance
Taosze spiny toad is a medium-sized frog with smooth, delicate skin in a unique, bright to dull red colour covering its upper body. Its characteristics include a distinctly thin, elongated body, large dark eyes and small limbs. In the male, stout forearms are a defining feature. No significant patterns or markings adorn its body. Notably, juveniles and adults bear a similar appearance. Its eye-catching red colouration effectively distinguishes it from other species.
Behavior
Taosze spiny toad is typically nocturnal, solitary and territorial with remarkable vocalization during breeding season. Males routinely produce loud calls to attract females. Females embody unique breeding behavior, laying eggs in burrows near streams where the tadpoles eventually shift. This species exhibits a habit of burrowing in soil often for hibernation or to escape from predators, which is essential for their survival.
