General Info
Lifespan
30-50 years
Diet
The diet of kemp's ridley sea turtle mainly consists of carnivorous items. These sea turtles exhibit a preference for jellyfish and other soft-bodied fauna. Small invertebrates, crabs, and mollusks also form significant parts of their diet.
Appearance
Kemp's ridley sea turtle is a medium-sized turtle with a hard, shell-like body covered in scutes. It has a dark gray or green carapace with lighter, nearly white plastron. Unique to kemp's ridley sea turtle are their paddle-like flippers, large head and slightly hooked beak. The males are typically larger than females, with a more elongated tail. No significant differences in coloration are observed with age.
Behavior
Kemp's ridley sea turtle exhibits solitary, nocturnal nesting habits, laying its eggs on sandy beaches. Known for its lengthy migratory journeys, it spends a significant portion of its life in the open ocean. Strongly territorial, kemp's ridley sea turtle performs distinct head-bobbing displays to discourage intruders. Remarkably, this species has adapted to survive in both tropical and temperate environments.
