Description

With a body length of 77 to 98 centimeters and a weight of 19 to 32 kilograms, the southern hairy nose wombat is the smallest wombat species. Like all wombats, it is characterized by its massive, bear-like physique. The limbs are short and strong and end in claws suitable for digging. The head is large and wide, the eyes are small, the ears are long and pointed. In contrast to the other species, their fur is soft and silky. The fur is dyed gray to gray-brown.

Diet

Southern hairy-nosed wombat predominantly feeds on plant roots, supplemented with tubers and grasses. This species is nocturnal and forages using its clawed forelimbs and sensitive snout to locate food.

Appearance

Southern hairy-nosed wombat is a medium-sized, stocky mammal with coarse, bristly fur. Its body is predominantly gray-brown, with lighter fur on its undersides. Its most prominent feature is its large, leathery snout, which is studded with sensory whiskers. Males and females both sport this characteristic snout; however, males are generally larger and more robust. Unlike other mammals, southern hairy-nosed wombat has no tail.

Behavior

Southern hairy-nosed wombat is a nocturnal, burrowing animal adopting a solitary lifestyle with low social interaction. It spends extensive time foraging for plant material and fungi at night, using its keen sense of smell. Its digging behavior, crucial for survival, creates complex warrens for shelter and avoiding predators. Though typically non-aggressive, southern hairy-nosed wombat displays territorial behaviour through scent marking.
