Diet
As an ophiophagous species, eastern kingsnake primarily feeds on other snakes. However, it also possesses a diversified diet, consuming lizards, birds, and small mammals, demonstrating predatory adaptability. Eastern kingsnake's dietary preferences vary based on its geographic location, consuming more mammalian and reptilian species in northern areas and favoring snakes in southern regions.
Appearance
Eastern kingsnake is a medium-to-large snake featuring a robust, cylindrical body with smooth, shiny scales. Its coloration is chiefly dark, with lighter, whitish bands that enclose a series of brown-red to black crossbands, presenting a striking contrast. It lacks any external appendages such as limbs or wings, but does possess a long, tapering tail. Across all ages and genders, its appearance remains largely consistent.
Behavior
Eastern kingsnake is a nocturnal, solitary species that primarily feeds on other reptiles. It defends its territory through mimicry and displays aggressive behavior when threatened. This species exhibits unique ophiophagy behavior, often consuming venomous snakes. Eastern kingsnake hibernates during winter, ensuring survival in its natural habitat.
