Description
The European green lizard (Lacerta viridis) is a large lizard distributed across European midlatitudes from Slovenia and eastern Austria to as far east as the Black Sea coasts of Ukraine and Turkey. It is often seen sunning on rocks or lawns, or sheltering amongst bushes.

Appearance
European green lizard is a brightly colored reptile with a streamlined body, stretching up to 40cm in length. Skin pattern typically features dominant greens with minor blue and brown markings. Males display colorful throats during mating season, ranging from blue to turquoise. Its scales are smooth and shiny, while the slender tail can regenerate if lost. Young ones tend to have more muted hues, becoming vibrant as they mature.
Behavior
European green lizard live a largely solitary life with a territorial nature, marking their space through scent markers. These lizards often bask in sunlit environments, a behavior necessary for their thermo-regulation. Their diet primarily consists of insects, which they hunt through ambush tactics. Male european green lizard have notable courtship displays, involving push-ups and head-bobs.
