Description
Puku stand about 80 cm (31 in) at the shoulder and weigh from 70 to 80 kg (150 to 180 lb). The puku is sandy brown in colour, with the underbelly a slightly lighter brown. The coat is rougher than the similar-sized southern reedbuck, lechwe or impala, or the smaller oribi. Males have 50-cm-long, ridge-structured horns which are very vaguely lyre-shaped.

Diet
Puku is primarily a herbivore with a grazing diet. It has an inclination for grasses, particularly during the rainy season when its nutritional quality is high. Along with grass, puku sometimes feeds on leaves, flowers, and fruits too.
Appearance
Puku is a medium-sized antelope with a slender body covered in short, sleek fur. The fur ranges from pale yellow-brown to ruddy-brown, with males being darker than females. It possesses distinctive facial markings, with white patches under the eyes and on the throat. Males of puku are adorned with long, slightly curved horns.
Behavior
Puku exhibits a gregarious social structure, forming herds of up to twenty individuals. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon, these animals are largely grazers, preferring new shoots and leaves. Highly territorial, males often engage in intense fights over territory and females. Their survival in semi-arid regions is notably facilitated by an ability to endure long periods without water.
