 The Eastern mud turtle (Kinosternon subrubrum) or common mud turtle is a common species of turtle endemic to the United States.

 Eastern mud turtle primarily feeds on small aquatic invertebrates, favoring snails, worms, and amphibian larvae. It also occasionally supplements its diet with plant matter and carrion, showcasing omnivorous tendencies. 
   Appearance
 Eastern mud turtle is a small, compact turtle with a smooth, dome-shaped carapace. Its overall coloration is dark brown to black, occasionally with subtle red or yellow markings. The scutes are marked with growth rings. Its plastron is large, cross-shaped, and has moveable hinges. Males differ from females by having a longer and thicker tail, and in some cases, more noticeable color patterns. Juveniles are brighter with patterned shells. 
   Behavior
 Eastern mud turtle is a primarily nocturnal creature, spending the majority of the day hidden beneath submerged vegetation or within burrows. It is a solitary species known for its carnivorous diet, including aquatic invertebrates and small fish. Eastern mud turtle exhibits a unique 'basking' behavior but spends lesser time on land compared to its relatives.
