 The Sonora mud turtle (Kinosternon sonoriense) is a species of turtle in the Kinosternidae family. It is found in Mexico and the United States. Also known as the Sonoyta Mud Turtle

   Appearance
 Sonora mud turtle is a small aquatic turtle, with a shell size typically around 15cm. It has a robust, streamlined body covered in tough, scaly skin. This species sports a brown to dark green upper shell with yellow or cream underparts. The tail is long and tapering, while males have a thicker, slightly domed shell compared to females. Notably, sonora mud turtle has peculiar hinged plastrons on the lower shell allowing it to close up for defense. 
   Behavior
 Sonora mud turtle displays primarily nocturnal, solitary behavior, specialized for survival in arid environments. This species excavates burrows for shelter and to alleviate temperature extremes. They exhibit a sit-and-wait hunting strategy, feeding mainly on small invertebrates. During the dry season, they aestivate to conserve resources. Males show territorial mating rituals, snout-bumping rivals out of their territory.
