Description
 The rough-footed mud turtle (Kinosternon hirtipes) is a species of mud turtle in the family Kinosternidae. The species is endemic to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.

 Rough-footed mud turtle predominantly feeds on various small crustaceans, particularly snails and clams. This species also supplements its diet with aquatic insects, small fish, and occasional water plants. 
   Appearance
 Rough-footed mud turtle is a small to medium-sized turtle, characterized by a domed carapace that typically features hues of brown or black. It is readily identifiable by three ridges running along its shell, its plastron equipped with movable hinges. The tail is relatively short, with males possessing a longer, thicker one. This species has wart-like tubercles on its rear legs and a blunt, non-projecting snout. 
   Behavior
 Rough-footed mud turtle is a primarily solitary species with nocturnal and crepuscular activity patterns. Notable aspects of their behavior include their process of burrow construction for shelter and thermoregulation. Their territorial behavior remains limited, showing little aggression. To adapt to their habitat, these turtles have developed a diet specific to readily available food, comprising of aquatic invertebrates and plants.
