Description
Karusasaurus polyzonus, commonly known as the Karoo girdled lizard or the Southern karusa lizard, is a species of lizards in the family Cordylidae.
General Info
Diet
Karoo girdled lizard primarily consumes a diet of small arthropods. Its specialized jaws and sharp teeth allow it to precisely capture and quickly consume prey such as beetles, spiders, and centipedes.
Appearance
Karoo girdled lizard is a medium-sized dinosaur with an elongated, streamlined body. Its skin is smooth and covered in small, flat scales. The main coloration is dark grey, broken up by irregular bands of lighter grey along its flanks and tail. Notable are the high, sail-like structures on its spine, possibly used for thermoregulation or display, and the long, slender tail. There are currently no known differences in appearance related to age, gender or subspecies.
Behavior
Karoo girdled lizard is a solitary species, demonstrating a markedly nocturnal lifestyle. This animal significantly relies on its climbing skills to avoid predators. Its diet is heavily insectivorous, frequently initiating foraging activity at dusk. Karoo girdled lizard also exhibits unique prehensile tail behavior for balance during arboreal navigation.
