Diet
The primary food source for southern round-gland toad is omnivorous in nature, with a preference for soft bodied invertebrates, especially arthropods. Occasionally, vegetable matter such as decaying plant leaves also form a part of their nourishment.
Appearance
Southern round-gland toad is a medium-sized toad with rough, irregularly warted skin. Males typically emit a blueish sheen while females remain duller in coloration. A noticeable feature includes parotoid glands located behind each eye. Making it visually unique, this toad presents a dramatic shift in hue, possessing a dark upper body that smoothly transitions to a lighter ventral surface. Its eyes are large, round, and golden with horizontally elliptical pupils.
Behavior
Southern round-gland toad is a nocturnal amphibian, typically solitary except during breeding season when males engage in competition via calls. This species exhibits moisture-dependent behavior, primarily residing near water sources. Notably, southern round-gland toad employs a defensive posture when threatened, inflating its body and positioning to expose the vibrant ventral surface. It survives principally on a diet of insects and small invertebrates.
