Description
The green iguana (Iguana iguana), also known as the American iguana, is a large, arboreal, mostly herbivorous species of lizard of the genus Iguana. It is native to Central, South America, and the Caribbean. Usually, this animal is simply called the iguana. Green iguana predominately follows a herbivorous diet, chiefly consuming green leafy plants. Special dietary inclinations include flowers, fruit, and soft shoots, with tender leaf tips being a particular favorite.
Appearance
The green iguana is a large, long-bodied lizard with a robust tail. It possesses a rough, scale-covered skin, which ranges from green to grayish, and a row of spines extending from the neck to the tail. It displays a dewlap, a loose flap of skin beneath the neck, more noticeable in males. Young green iguana are brighter green, helping them blend into their leafy habitats. With age, their coloration becomes darker and duller.
Behavior
Green iguana displays a mostly diurnal lifestyle, spending time sunning itself on rocks and branches, aiding digestion. This species is solitary, mostly interacting during mating season and territorial disputes, employing head bobbing, jaw gaping, and dewlaps extension as combative displays. Selected trees are utilized for nesting, where females lay their eggs.
