Description
The Lesser Antillean iguana (Iguana delicatissima) is a large arboreal lizard endemic to the Lesser Antilles. It is one of two species of lizard of the genus Iguana and is in severe decline due to habitat destruction, feral predators, hunting, and hybridization with its sister species, the green iguana. Successful captive breeding of this species has been limited to only two instances as most captive laid eggs tend to be infertile.

Diet
Lesser antillean iguana primarily sustains itself on a plant-based diet, favoring leaves, tender shoots, and fruits. This species has a unique preference for the fruits of the Micocoulier tree and the Rachis plant.
Appearance
Lesser antillean iguana is a medium-sized reptile with a lengthy, slender body shape and scaly skin. Its forest-green coloration is marked with subtle black stripes along the back, a detail that helps the lizard blend into its leafy surroundings. The species exhibits a tall dorsal crest and a long whip-like tail, characteristic features of iguanas. There are no significant differences in appearance due to age, gender or subspecies.
Behavior
Lesser antillean iguana is primarily herbivorous and is most active during the day, spending much of its time basking and foraging. It is a solitary animal, interacting only during mating season. It demonstrates a unique head-bobbing behavior for communication and showing dominance. Although not territorial, it uses visual signals to maintain personal space within shared habitats.
