Description
It is brownish, with 13 alternating brown and whitish longitudinal lines (sometimes partially broken into spots) on its back and sides, creating rows of whitish spots within dark lines.

Thirteen-lined ground squirrel primarily thrives on a diet of vegetation, with a keen preference for forbs and grasses. Its consumption also extends to seeds, fruits, and occasionally insects during warmer months.
Appearance
Thirteen-lined ground squirrel is a small-sized rodent featuring a streamlined, cylindrical body shape. Its fur is short, dense, and remarkably smooth, predominantly golden-yellow in color with characteristic parallel black and white stripes running down the back. The animal sports a bushy tail with a black tip and doesn't exhibit any notable differences in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Thirteen-lined ground squirrel exhibits diurnal behavior, foraging during the day for grasses and insects and retreating to complex burrow systems at night. They are solitary outside the breeding season, revealing a territorial nature by marking their environment with scent glands. Thirteen-lined ground squirrel enter a state of torpor in winter, reducing body temperature and metabolic rate to conserve energy.
