Description

The Koa Tao Island caecilian, Ichthyophis kohtaoensis, is a species of amphibian in the Ichthyophiidae family found in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, rivers, intermittent rivers, swamps, freshwater marshes, intermittent freshwater marshes, plantations, rural gardens, urban areas, heavily degraded former forests, irrigated land, and seasonally

Appearance

The koh tao snake frog is a small, soil-dwelling amphibian with a slender, elongated body shape, similar to worms. They possess smooth, moist, scale-less skin that is predominantly luminescent white or pale, bluish-grey, often with a soft pinkish underbelly. The koh tao snake frog lacks limbs, using its tail and segmented trunk to burrow. No prominent differences in appearance are known to exist due to age or gender.

Behavior

Koh tao snake frog is a nocturnal species with a solitary lifestyle. It is burrow-dwelling, known for its sophisticated burrowing behavior. Koh tao snake frog exhibits unique skin-breathing behavior due to the absence of lungs and demonstrates territoriality as males aggressively guard their chosen burrow. Its skin-secretion behavior for defense contributes significantly to survival in its moist forest habitat.
