Diet
Coast nightsnake primarily preys on invertebrates, including various types of insects and centipedes. Occasionally, it consumes small lizards and their eggs, demonstrating opportunistic feeding habits.
Appearance
Coast nightsnake is a small to medium-sized snake, known for its dark, round eyes with vertical pupils. Sporting a brownish-gray to pinkish-tan color, its body has a series of dark blotches down the middle, with smaller spots along its sides. The underside is typically pale or cream-colored. There's little sexual dimorphism, but the young often display more bold patterns that fade as they mature.
Behavior
Coast nightsnake are primarily nocturnal, spending their days hidden under rocks or in soil crevices. They are ambush predators that wait for prey to come near. Encounters between individuals are often aggressive, with biting as a common interaction. Their primary defensive behavior is mimicry, using their coloration to resemble venomous counterparts and discourage predators.
