Description
Hypnale hypnale is a venomous pitviper species endemic to India and Sri Lanka. Common names include the hump-nosed viper, Merrem's hump-nosed viper and others listed below at § Common names.

Hump-nosed viper is a small venomous snake with a slender body, covered in scales. It has a robust brownish dorsum and a pale ventral side, marked by dark crossbars. The prominent feature is its head, triangular in shape and set off from the neck. It possesses elliptical pupils and heat-sensitive pits between the eyes and nostrils. Gender and age don't noticeably affect hump-nosed viper's appearance.
Behavior
Hump-nosed viper is a solitary, nocturnal species. It hunts primarily at dusk and dawn, ambushing its prey with a rapid, accurate strike. This snake has a unique defensive posturing, forming a conical shape with its body to intimidate potential predators. It tends to establish and defend territories near water sources and mate during monsoon season.
