Description

Wright's mountain tree frog (Hyla wrightorum) is a species of frog in the Hylidae family found in Mexico and the United States. Its natural habitats are temperate forests, temperate grassland, rivers, and freshwater marshes. Hyla wrightorum has been regarded as a synonym of Hyla eximia, which is listed as the state amphibian of Arizona. As presently circumscribed, Hyla eximia is endemic to Mexico and does not occur in Arizona.

Wright's mountain tree frog primarily feeds on a variety of arthropods with a preference for insects, particularly ants as well as small spiders. It exploits lower strata of vegetation to forage for prey.

Appearance

Wright's mountain tree frog is a medium-size frog with a slim, streamlined body and smooth, moist skin. Its primary color is a vibrant, emerald green, accentuated by occasional black markings. Males have dark, enlarged vocal sacs, further highlighting gender differences in this species. Being arboreal, it possesses large toe pads for efficient climbing. Juveniles have a more muted coloration than adults, adding variety to the species' overall appearance.

Behavior

Wright's mountain tree frog are nocturnal, spending their days under rocks or leaves for protection. They are arboreal, adeptly leaping between trees in their hunt for insects. They are solitary, only coming together for breeding, which involves complex vocal communication. Their skin color subtly changes, aiding in camouflage within their forest habitat.
