Description
Hydrophis cyanocinctus, commonly called the annulated sea snake or the blue-banded sea snake, is a species of venomous sea snake in the family Elapidae.
General Info
Lifespan
7-10 years
Diet
Peters' sea snake primarily feeds on fish, specifically eels. It utilizes a unique hunting strategy, subduing its prey using its potent venom before swallowing it whole.
Appearance
Peters' sea snake is highly distinctive with its laterally compressed, elongated body, coated in shiny, scale-covered skin. Its primary color is bright ocean blue, dramatically offset by dark crossbands. The tail is flattened and this reptile is distinguished by fangs- an epitome of marine adaptation. There are no significant variations within this species due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Peters' sea snake is a solitary, marine reptile, characterized by a nocturnal hunting pattern. It primarily preys upon eels and small fish, captured with lightning-quick agility. Irregular on land, peters' sea snake exhibits unique sea-faring behaviors, including a distinct sideways swimming motion. No specific territorial behavior is evident, as the species is noted for its wide geographic distribution.
