Highland Pony is a robust, muscular horse, standing typically between 13 and 14.2 hands high. The coat color predominantly manifests itself in a range of muted dun hues, including yellow, mouse, or grey. Distinguishing features include a dense mane and tail of the same shade as the coat and broad stripes down the spine, known as an eel stripe. A pronounced facial moustache and notable 'feathering' at the fetlocks are breed-specific traits. Though the breed's eyes are typically dark, they may lighten with age.

Highland Pony is known for its calm, docile temperament and hardy nature, readily acclimating to varied circumstances. Highly sociable, this breed demonstrates ease in group settings.
