Description

Heteronotia binoei, commonly known as Bynoe's gecko, is a species of lizard endemic to Australia. One of Australia's least habitat-specific geckos, it occurs naturally across much of the country, and has also established in areas where it does not occur naturally, such as urban Perth, Western Australia. It is dark brown to reddish brown, depending on the colour of the ground upon which it lives. There are irregular light bands with dark edges along its back.

Diet

Prickly gecko is largely insectivorous, relying primarily on small invertebrates for nutrition. Its diet includes a variety of insects such as ants, beetles, and spiders, showcasing a preference for arthropods.

Appearance

Prickly gecko is a small, robust gecko with a long, slender tail and rough, granular skin. Often showing varied shades of brown with irregular dark bands across its body, this gecko is well-camouflaged in its natural habitat. Females particularly have more noticeably bold and consistent patches. With vertical pupils, its alert eyes contribute significantly to its appearance.

Behavior

Prickly gecko is a nocturnal gecko characterized by their solitary existence. They exhibit territorial behavior, often utilizing scent marking. Known for their adaptive skills, they dwell on the ground amongst leaf litter, under rocks and wood debris, a behavior for survival beyond their excellent camouflage abilities. Their foraging activities peak during the twilight hours.
