Heterixalus madagascariensis (commonly referred to as the blue-back reed frog, or occasionally the powder-blue reed frog) is a species of frog in the Hyperoliidae family endemic to Madagascar. Blue-back reed frog mainly thrives on a diet of small arthropods. Known for active hunting, it feeds on insects, particularly Dipterans and Hemipterans, enriching its nutritional intake with a variety of different arthropod species.
Appearance
Blue-back reed frog is a medium-sized frog with a sturdy bodily structure, its skin adorned with smooth textures. Its coloration varies from different shades of green to yellowish or reddish brown, often featuring darker, irregular spots. Though there aren't significant gender differences, juveniles are less colorful, often appearing more brownish. Blue-back reed frog does not possess wings, horns, or long tails.
Behavior
Blue-back reed frog is a diurnal, predominantly terrestrial species, known to forage among vegetation for food. This species is a superb jumper, a behavior which aids in escape from predators, and in terms of social dynamics, it engages in choruses, especially after rainfall. Though not overly territorial, members are likely to exhibit aggressive interactions during the breeding season.
