Appearance
The yellow-headed temple turtle is a medium-sized aquatic turtle with a stocky, oval carapace and a strong, stumpy tail. Its shell is usually a dull brown to black color, often adorned with small white patches. The underside of the shell (plastron) ranges from cream to yellow and often exhibits a unique pattern of black blotches. Notably, adults tend to exhibit a brighter plastron than juveniles. Its skin is generally a dark, earthy color with hints of yellow on the head and neck.
Behavior
Yellow-headed temple turtle is a solitary and mostly nocturnal species, known for its burrowing behavior, often found hidden under forest leaf litter during the day. It uses its strong, sharp claws for digging and foraging, primarily for fruits, vegetation, and invertebrates. Yellow-headed temple turtle has a notably aggressive demeanor when threatened, extending its head out from its shell and hissing to deter predators. Defending its territory is typical, marked by the secretion from femoral glands.
