Description
Gymnophthalmus speciosus (golden spectacled tegu) is a microteiid lizard found in Mexico, Central America and Colombia. It is a small, cylindrical lizard with a long tail and a tendency to reduced extremeties.

Golden spectacled tegu is a small, slender lizard with smooth, shiny skin. It exhibits a striking golden-yellow color on its back, accented by black lateral stripes that run from head to tail. The underbody is typically pale. A noticeable characteristic is the absence of limbs, resembling a snake. There are no significant visual distinctions based on age, sex, or subspecies.
Behavior
Golden spectacled tegu displays diurnal behavior, actively foraging for food during daylight hours. Primarily solitary, they interact chiefly during mating season. This lizard demonstrates strong territorial tendencies, aggressively defending its chosen area. Significantly, golden spectacled tegu has evolved a burrowing instinct, allowing it to survive in its native sandy habitats by easily escaping predators and extreme weather.
