Description

The Alabama map turtle (Graptemys pulchra) is a species of emydid turtle endemic to the southern United States. Differentiation from other turtle species includes a black stripe running down the center of its back with knobs extruding from it, but these projections wear down with age. T.H. Bean and L. Diet

Alabama map turtle predominantly feeds on molluscs, particularly snails and bivalves. To a lesser extent, insects and crayfish also feature in its diet, supplemented occasionally by certain aquatic plants.

Appearance

Alabama map turtle is a medium-sized turtle, with a dome-shaped, smooth carapace. It brands a distinct pattern of yellow lines and blotches against a predominantly olive or brown background. The plastron is typically plain yellow while its head, neck, and limbs exhibit intricate yellow stripes. Male alabama map turtle is smaller with a longer, thicker tail than female, but lacks the high-domed shell of the latter.

Behavior

Alabama map turtle is a semi-aquatic species known for its diurnal lifestyle, typically basking on partially submerged logs during warm period of the day. They display moderate aggression and territoriality, particularly in breeding males. Foraging primarily for mollusks and crustaceans, they utilize their sharp, downturned beaks proficiently. Their aquatic adaptability allows them to survive in various freshwater environments.
