Description
The black-knobbed map turtle (Graptemys nigrinoda), formerly known as the black-knobbed sawback, is a small to medium-sized aquatic turtle with light gray skin. Diet
Delta map turtle is predominantly herbivorous, primarily feasting on aquatic vegetation. It displays a particular preference for filamentous green algae, aquatic macrophytes, and soft parts of emergent plants, supplementing its diet with small invertebrates on occasion.
Appearance
Delta map turtle is a medium-sized turtle with a keel-less carapace, typically olive to brown with a unique network of bold, black lines. Its plastron is yellowish with complex dark patterns. A distinct feature is its large head, often displaying striking yellow stripes. Males usually possess a longer tail and narrower shell, while females are larger and exhibit broader shells. Juveniles have a more vibrant coloration which fades with age.
Behavior
Delta map turtle is a uniquely sedentary, aquatic species with primarily diurnal habits. It's known for synchronous basking on logs in the river, maximizing sun exposure. This species exhibits omnivorous foraging behaviors, consuming both plant and animal matter. Males are territorial, showing aggression during mating seasons. Delta map turtle displays an elaborate courtship ritual, using its long claws in a 'tickle' display to woo females.
