Diet

Wood turtle's diet primarily consists of a variety of vegetative matter. This includes an array of aquatic vegetation, woody plants, and berries. They also show a preference for munching on mushrooms and carrion occasionally.

Appearance

Wood turtle is a medium-sized turtle with a robust, sculpted shell. It has a dark brown to black coloration, giving the animal a camouflaged appearance in its environment. Its shell is adorned with a unique geometric, raised pattern, which is undisclosed for males and females. Wood turtle features a compact, sturdy tail and strong limbs with webbed feet adapted for both terrestrial and aquatic environments.

Behavior

Wood turtle is primarily solitary and nocturnal, known for its unique shell-sculpting behavior using its sharp hind claws. Foraging mainly on mollusks and aquatic invertebrates, it exhibits an indirect method of finding food, preferring low current, soft substrate water bodies. No typical nesting behavior has been observed. Notably, it uses scent marking to lay territorial claims, a behavior that aids survival in its temperate North American habitat.
