Diet
Shedao island pitviper primarily feeds on migratory birds, intelligently timing its active periods to align with bird migration seasons. It shows a preference for small, easy-to-subdue avian species, aiding optimal survival on the island habitat.
Appearance
Shedao island pitviper is a small-sized viper with a robust, triangular body and cap-like scaly skin. It sports a vivid coloration, mainly being greenish-brown with dark, irregular bands and spots. Young snakes exhibit brighter colors than adults. Its most distinctive features include a relatively flat head, fangs that fold into the mouth, and a short tail.
Behavior
Shedao island pitviper is a nocturnal, distinctively aggressive pit viper. Notably, this species bears dramatic temperature-based color variation – turning darker in the cold. Primarily solitary, shedao island pitviper exhibits strong territorial inclinations, fiercely defending their space, particularly during mating season. Its survival in the wild can be attributed to its unique venomous bite and its ability to blend in with its rocky habitat.
