Diet
Rock mamushi exhibit an exclusively carnivorous diet, heavily favoring small mammals such as rodents and shrews. Their dietary habits showcase well-adapted predatory techniques and venomous strikes to capture and immobilize prey.
Appearance
Rock mamushi is a moderately sized snake, with a compact body covered in small, irregular, keeled scales. Its main coloration is dark brown, often shaded with black, and typically embellished with a pattern of orange or red bands. It possesses a sharply pointed tail with a rattle. No major differences in appearance exist due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Rock mamushi is a solitary, predominantly nocturnal species. Its prime activity happens after dusk, characterized by hunting and foraging, favoring lizards and rodents. Its defensive strategy includes vibrating its tail to mimic a rattlesnake's sound. When threatened, it adopts an S-shaped strike posture while elevating the anterior body to strike precisely and swiftly.
