Description
The black-lined plated lizard is a medium-sized lizard native to central and southern Africa. Due to its ability to be easily tamed, it became a popular lizard species in the pet trade. It can be found in semi-arid areas, often near burrows and holes, where it can easily hide if attacked. Its main food are insects, worms, and snails.

Appearance
Black-lined plated lizard is a medium-sized, robust lizard with a total length of up to 35 cm. The body is flat with smooth, shiny, and robust scales that are primarily dark brown or black, highlighted by cream to yellowish longitudinal lines. The tail is thick and short compared to the body. Distinctive sexual dimorphism is not observed in this species.
Behavior
Black-lined plated lizard is a diurnal reptile that is primarily terrestrial, spending much of its time basking or foraging for insects and small invertebrates. This species exhibits a solitary nature, interacting with others mostly during the breeding season. It leverages the natural camouflage provided by its body patterns to evade predators. Black-lined plated lizard does not display significant territorial behaviors beyond breeding males defending their mating area.
