Diet
Long-nosed leopard lizard primarily relies on a diet of insects and arthropods, often preying on ants, beetles, spiders, and millipedes. Occasionally, it will supplement its diet with small lizards and plant materials.
Appearance
Long-nosed leopard lizard is a medium-sized lizard characterized by its slender, long-tail body. It sports fine, rough scales predominantly in hues of tan, brown, and grey, transitioning to lighter colors on the underbelly. Adult males display distinguishing blue-black coloration on the sides and throat. Females and juveniles lack this feature, maintaining a more uniform brownish pattern. Noteworthy are the small black spots scattered randomly across the back.
Behavior
Long-nosed leopard lizard primarily exhibits diurnal behavior, remaining active during the day and hunting insects with a sit-and-wait strategy. It is mostly solitary, except during the breeding season. This species displays viviparity, giving birth to live young, a unique survival adaptation for its arid habitat. Long-nosed leopard lizard is highly territorial and uses its bright, undulating ventral display to ward off competitors.
