Description

Originating from the harsh moors of South West England, exmoor Pony is ancient and robust, with a lineage tracing back to the ice age. Admired for their resilience, these ponies exhibit predominant dark-brown coat with mealy markings around the muzzle and eyes. Due to their natural hardiness and sure-footedness, they provide exceptional services in conservation grazing and carriage driving.

Standing at 11.2 to 12.3 hands, exmoor Pony showcases a sturdy, well-muscled physique indicative of its resilience. Its robust, compact frame garners a distinctive muscular 'A' shape, setting it apart from others. A characteristic feature is its thick, winter coat that morphs from a rich, dark brown or bay to a lighter shade on the underparts, juxtaposed against a dark mane and tail which remain short, thick, and often untrimmed. Its mealy markings around the eyes, muzzle, flank, and underbelly are distinctive. Typically, the eyes are dark, mirroring its coat, with expressive aging changes observed.

Behavior

Exmoor Pony are known for their strong survival instinct and independent nature, indicative of their wild origins. They are intelligent, capable of quickly adapting to their environment, and responsive to training with patience and consistency. Not overly social, they tend to form small, tightly-knit groups.
