Description

The northern two-lined salamander (Eurycea bislineata) is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae found in Canada and the United States. Its natural habitats are temperate forests, temperate shrubland, rivers, intermittent rivers, freshwater marshes, freshwater springs, arable land, and urban areas. It is more water-oriented than the related northern redback salamander, and can often be found in and around water such as rain puddles, streams, swamps, and damp stream bed

Northern two-lined salamander primarily feeds on small invertebrates, including various aquatic insect larvae and small crustaceans. Diet adaptation occurs depending on their habitat, ensuring optimal nutrient intake.

Appearance

Northern two-lined salamander is a small, slender salamander with smooth skin. Its color varies from pale yellow to black, often displaying distinct dark stripes running the body length. Unlike its tail, which is long with a slight keel, it's limbs are short and thin. Size and coloration may vary somewhat with age and environment, but there are no marked differences between the genders.

Behavior

Northern two-lined salamander is primarily solitary and nocturnal, actively hunting invertebrates at night. This species is also known for its unique courtship characteristic, involving tail-straddling walks. Surviving in various environments, it spends winters in terrestrial burrows or aquatic sites, demonstrating remarkable adaptability. Territorial aggression is not observed in northern two-lined salamander, making it unique among amphibians.
