Description
It differs from the brown-breasted urchin, as the name already suggests, above all by its white breast, which is white from the middle of the brown or brown-gray environment, from about the middle. Occasionally there are also animals with a wholly white underside. The breast spot can get bigger with age. The body length of 22 to 30 centimeters and the average weight of 1000 grams are the same as the brown-breasted urchin and the northern white-breasted urchin. The top of the head and the back are provided with spikes, in the case of an attack, the animal can roll up into a ball.

Diet
Southern white-breasted hedgehog primarily feeds on invertebrates like insects, beetles, and worms. This nocturnal species also exhibits opportunistic feeding behavior, incorporating seasonal fruits and small vertebrates into its diet.
Appearance
Southern white-breasted hedgehog is a small, cylindrical mammal covered in a coat of stiff, sharp spines primarily of a dark brown color, which can be defensively rolled into a ball. Its compact body has a short tail, petite ears, and a pointed snout. The undersides are coated in soft fur of a lighter hue. No notable sexual dimorphism or age-related variations exist in its appearance.
Behavior
Southern white-breasted hedgehog is a predominantly solitary and nocturnal mammal, taking shelter in burrows during the day. It forages at night for insects, small mammals and reptiles, utilizing a keen sense of smell. It exhibits self-anointing behavior when encountering novel scents, where it produces froth in its mouth before spreading it over its spines. Displaying strong territoriality, adult southern white-breasted hedgehog often patrol and mark their home range with urine and feces.
