Description

Engystomops petersi (common name: Peters' dwarf frog) is a species of frog in the Leptodactylidae family. It is found in Amazonian Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It is morphologically similar to its sibling species, Engystomops freibergi, and for a period the latter was considered to be a junior synonym of Engystomops petersi. Peters’ dwarf frog primarily feeds on small arthropods, demonstrating a particular preference for insects. Intriguingly, this species exhibits a specialized predation habit towards ants, beetles, and spiders, contributing significantly to its diet.

Appearance

Peters’ dwarf frog is a modestly sized frog, with a round body shape and smooth, damp skin. Its primary coloration is brown, with darker brown to black spots speckling the back and flanks. Males have a single vocal sac beneath their chin, which inflates during mating calls. This species does not exhibit any significant differences in appearance with age, gender, or subspecies.

Behavior

Peters’ dwarf frog displays peculiar reproductive behavior wherein the male vocalizes to attract females for breeding and subsequently undergoes parental care. This nocturnal species is known for its contentious nature, defending territories fiercely. Inhabiting tropical rainforests, peters’ dwarf frog adapts by blending into muddy surroundings, camouflaging itself from predators.
