Diet
European pond turtle's dietary habits are predominantly omnivorous, with a preference for aquatic invertebrates such as insects and mollusks. However, it also consumes a considerable amount of plant matter, specifically aquatic vegetation.
Appearance
European pond turtle is a medium-sized turtle with a distinctive dome-shaped carapace that may vary in shades from olive-green to black. Its skin is also dark, webbed feet aiding in swimming. Markings may occur, usually yellow or light brown. The head is small with prominent eyes, accommodating retractable neck. Males have a distinct concave plastron and larger tail. Juveniles possess a lighter shell with more pronounced patterns.
Behavior
European pond turtle is an aquatic, largely nocturnal specie. Surface basking, diving, and land excursions are frequent activities. It is often observed engaging in communal basking. Although territorial tendencies are mild, they display plastron-pressing as a behavior indicating territorial disputes. During mating, characteristic behavior includes biting. Notably, the species hibernates underwater from October to April.
