Description
The garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus) is a mammal of the family of the Bilche. The eastern direction today in numerous geographically isolated occurrences fragmented distribution area is limited to Europe. Garden dormers are omnivores and live despite their name mostly in the forest. For the species drastic declines in size and area reductions have been recorded in recent decades, the IUCN therefore leads the garden dormouse as a kind of "near-threatened".

Garden dormouse is omnivorous, predominantly consuming insects, fruits and small birds. It has a peculiar affinity towards oak acorns, hence commonly inhabiting oak forests to satisfy its dietary preferences.
Appearance
Garden dormouse is a small rodent with a body length of up to 15cm, sporting a slim shape covered in soft, velvety fur. It exhibits a predominantly brownish-grey coat with a crisp white underbelly. Its tail, nearly as long as its body, is artificially bushy with a prominent white brush tip. This animal has large rounded ears and black eyes, which lend it a distinctive face. Both sexes and all ages look similar.
Behavior
Garden dormouse is predominantly nocturnal, foraging for plant-based food and invertebrates. Its behavior is solitary outside the mating season, with males marking and defending territories by drumming with hind feet. Garden dormouse showcases a notable ability for climbing and leaping, adapted to its arboreal habitats. It also demonstrates a fascinating tail autotomy defense against predators.
