Description
California alligator lizard is a type of Northern Alligator lizard that demonstrates a fascinatingly cooperative mating strategy. It forms monogamous pairs oftentimes lasting a lifetime, a rarity among reptiles. Equally unique, this species can facultatively delay gestation, aligning the birth of their young with ideal ecological conditions. This adaptability proves vital for survival in its varied habitats, ranging from arid grasslands to cool, damp forests.

Its skin is covered in small, rough scales which are generally olive to brown, with darker blotches forming a reticulated pattern.
