Description

The southern alligator lizard (Elgaria multicarinata) is a common species of lizard native to the Pacific coast of North America. It ranges from Baja California to the state of Washington and lives in a variety of habitats including grasslands, chaparral, forests, and even urban areas. In dry climates, it is likely to be found in moist areas or near streams.

Appearance

Southern alligator lizard is a medium-sized lizard, boasting a robust, elongated body covered by scales. Its skin, primarily greenish-brown, often exhibits dual rows of darker spots running along its back. Noteworthy features include a noticeable fold of skin on each side of the body. Males are typically larger and show a more prominent postanal fold than females. Juveniles differ in appearance with bands across their back and tails.

Behavior

Southern alligator lizard is a diurnal reptile with a propensity for basking in sunshine. This solitary species is highly territorial, resorting to throat display and mouth gaping for defense. Fitted to its rocky habitat, southern alligator lizard's primary survival strategy is crepuscular camouflage against predators. Distinctive foraging habits involve active hunting and opportunistic feeding on a varied diet.
