Description
Echis carinatus is a venomous viper species found in parts of the Middle East and Central Asia, and especially the Indian subcontinent. It is the smallest member of the big four snakes that are responsible for causing the most snakebite cases and deaths, due to various factors including their frequent occurrence in highly populated regions, and their inconspicuous nature. Five subspecies are currently recognized, including the nominate subspecies described here.

Diet
Saw-scaled viper predominantly feeds on small mammals and birds. They employ an ambush strategy, immobilizing their prey with a venomous bite before consuming them. Their diet is highly variable depending on the available prey in their environment.
Appearance
Saw-scaled viper is a relatively small, cylindrical snake with keeled scales that give it a rough texture. Its primary color is a dusty, beige-brown that can vary in hue, often complemented by a distinctive series of bluish-white or pinkish chevron patterns down its back. Saw-scaled viper doesn't possess traditional 'snake fangs', but has a small pair of venomous, retractable teeth in the upper jaw.
Behavior
Saw-scaled viper exhibits a primarily nocturnal, solitary lifestyle, known for its characteristic threatening 'saw-scaled' behavior. In combat scenarios, it vigorously rubs its body scales together producing a distinct, intimidating sizzling noise. Its terrestrial foraging habits include ambushing prey, while its reproductive behavior involves complex courtship rituals. Highly territorial, saw-scaled viper aggressively safeguards its domain, in adaptation to its arid, rocky habitats.
