Appearance
Eastern indigo snake is a large, non-venomous snake with a robust, muscular body covered in smooth scales. Ranging in adulthood from charcoal black to a mix of yellow and olive green, their distinctive pattern includes a bold crimson throat and an often banded tail. Despite variations in color due to geography, the species retains a sleek, glossy appearance. There are no notable appearance differences across ages, genders, or subspecies.
Behavior
Eastern indigo snake is a diurnal species, actively foraging during the day for a variety of prey such as small mammals, birds, and reptiles. Notably agile, eastern indigo snake exhibits a fast, fluid intelligence in navigating its varied environments. Eastern indigo snake is solitary, excluding during mating sessions, and displays a territorial tendancy, often defending its domain against intruders. Unlike many of its kin, eastern indigo snake does not constrict its prey but instead strikes and swallows it whole.
