Description
The Iberian painted frog (Discoglossus galganoi, in Spanish sapillo pintojo ibérico) is a species of frog in the family Alytidae (formerly Discoglossidae). It is found in Portugal and Spain, where its natural habitats are temperate forests, temperate shrubland, Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation, rivers, intermittent rivers, swamps, freshwater marshes, intermittent freshwater marshes, sandy shores, arable land and grassland. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Iberian painted frog predominantly feeds on small invertebrates, primarily insects. This species exhibits an opportunistic feeding behaviour, easily preying on diverse types of insects, worms, and small arthropods in their habitat.
Appearance
Iberian painted frog is a small to medium-sized frog with a rounded body shape. Its skin is smooth and covered in tiny granules, varying in hues from brown to greyish, often marked with darker spots. Males typically display a brighter throat, indicating their gender. Its distinctive feature is the lack of a visible tympanic membrane (ear), which distinguishes it from other frog species.
Behavior
Iberian painted frog is a predominantly nocturnal species with a unique mating ritual involving the male emitting a loud call to attract females. Socially solitary outside of mating, its existence in damp habitats promotes a diet of insects, spiders, and worms. It is territorial, utilizing aggressive behavior and physical combat to protect its territory.
