General Info

Lifespan
2-3 years
Diet
Big-eared opossum is largely omnivorous, with a dietary preference for small insects and fruits. The species consumes vertebrates opportunistically, while supplementation from plant material and eggs offers a balanced diet.
Appearance
Big-eared opossum is a medium-sized marsupial with a robust body shape, covered with dense grayish-brown fur. Their underparts are notably lighter than their dorsal sides. This species features a broad head with protracted snout, sharp teeth, and large, pointed ears. Its prehensile tail, which is often longer than its body, is half-covered in fur, with the distal half being hairless. There are no significant differences in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Big-eared opossum is a nocturnal and arboreal species, primarily solitary barring mating season. It forages for various foods, including fruit, insects, birds, and small vertebrates. A unique behavior seen in this species is 'playing possum', a form of adaptive anti-predator behavior in which the animal simulates death. Big-eared opossum doesn't construct nests, but occupies tree cavities or abandoned burrows.
