Description

D. ochrophaeus is a medium-sized salamander that can grow to about 10 cm in length. Adults are brownish and can have a widely variable coloration pattern. Usually, it has a light stripe down the back, with a row of dark spots on the centre and flanked by dark pigments. As in all members of the genus, the hind legs are larger and stouter than the front legs. This species belongs to the "lungless salamander" family (Plethodontidae), and adults must keep their skin moist to breathe. It is a somewhat terrestrial salamander that can be found under stones, logs, and bark near springs, streams and other areas where the ground is saturated with water.

Allegheny mountain dusky salamander primarily feasts on small invertebrates, especially aquatic larval insects. Its dietary choices also display a penchant for small snails, spiders, and beetles, displaying a preference for soft-bodied prey.

Appearance

Allegheny mountain dusky salamander is a small-sized salamander with a stout body and smooth, glossy skin. It features a base color that ranges from light brown to black, with scattered dark brown or black blotches. Its underbelly is often lighter, with some individuals exhibiting a yellow hue. Males generally have a taller tail fin than females. This species lacks any form of wings or horns.

Behavior

Allegheny mountain dusky salamander is a semi-aquatic salamander known for its distinct nocturnal, solitary behavior. Commonly foraging for various small invertebrates at night, it avoids strong sunlight. It also interacts with conspecifics mainly during breeding season or territorial disputes, showcasing aggressive posturing but rarely resorting to physical attacks. Unlike other species, allegheny mountain dusky salamander excretes waste to deter competitors from its territory.
