Description
The leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), sometimes called the lute turtle or leathery turtle or simply the luth, is the largest of all living turtles and is the fourth-heaviest modern reptile behind three crocodilians. Diet
Leatherback sea turtle is predominantly a carnivorous species with a preference for gelatinous prey. Its diet remarkably consists of a high proportion of jellyfish and other soft-bodied invertebrate fauna such as sea cucumbers and squids.
Appearance
Leatherback sea turtle is a large sea turtle with a unique, leathery skin instead of a hard shell. The skin is predominantly bluish-black with light spots. Its rounded, cone-shaped body tapers towards the rear, ending in a powerful tail. It has two pairs of oversized flippers, used for swimming. There's no apparent visual difference between ages, genders, or subspecies.
Behavior
Leatherback sea turtle, a marine creature, has a unique foraging behavior. It performs long-distance migrations across oceans for feeding on jellyfish, its primarily prey. During nesting, females laboriously crawl ashore at night. Notably, unlike other turtles, this species doesn't have a territorial nature. Solitary for most of its life, leatherback sea turtle only congregates for mating and nesting.
