Diet
Rhinoceros iguana's diet predominantly comprises a variety of leafy plants, especially cactus pads. Its specialized jaws easily crush these fibrous foods; however, it also consumes fruits, flowers, and occasionally small invertebrates.
Appearance
The rhinoceros iguana is a robust, large-bodied reptile with coarse, scaly skin and a series of dorsal crests. Typically, its coloration ranges from grayish-brown to olive-green—perfect for blending into rocky landscapes. Males of this species flaunt a prominent, bony horn-like protrusion on their snouts, from which it gets its name. There are no significant variances in appearance due to age or subspecies.
Behavior
Rhinoceros iguana are typically diurnal, solitary animals. They exhibit territorial behavior, with males marking their domain with glandular secretions. These reptiles display slightly different dietary habits through the seasons; during dry periods, they focus more on feeding from native cacti. Using their sharp beaks, they exhibit unique behavior of pruning plants, promoting new growth which they later consume.
